Introduction to Perl

Variable names

Valid variable names begin with a letter, and then any number of letters, numbers and underscores (_).

Examples: 

$a
$name
$first_name
$LastNameOUT
$block13
$b276cd
$message_a3_B
$the_sum_of_all_combinations_tested_on_30_11_97

Note: Capital letters are legal, but not often used in Perl variable names.
